On September 9, Apple released the iPhone Duo to the public. Usually I'm curious about new releases, but this time, strangely, it isn't so attractive to me. The real reason is that I've already had a Samsung Galaxy Fold 8 since August 10, and I've been actively trying to get used to the device and the Android ecosystem. However, deep down, I realized that I no longer feel the iOS ecosystem is as convenient and comfortable to me as it used to be. First of all, the look of the hardware and software is too uniform and outdated. For the last 12 years, I've always been surrounded by similarly designed icons and UI/UX, which are so boring. Besides, there's no way to use the camera without a shutter sound or to record a phone conversation without notifying the other party. Above all, there's little room to customize the built-in UI/UX in iOS, whereas Galaxy phones offer huge room for tailoring the device using the so-called Good Lock app. Of course, there are drawbacks, too. Still, I prefer using a MacBook, so I've had to give up some hands-off features like iCloud photo sync โ though there are already various alternatives, even if none of them cover it 100%. The other critical weakness of the newly released Apple device is its price and weight. I'd have to pay at least KRW 1 million more to buy it, and I'd expect higher repair costs on top of that. Moreover, I'd have to carry a phone that's about 50g heavier. Both are especially critical for me. I have no desire to take the plunge and buy a smartphone priced over KRW 3 million in my current situation, and I'm someone who doesn't want to use a protective case, since I dislike the inconvenience of the extra weight.
Anyway, for the time being, I'll keep using my new Fold 8, enjoying the wider screen for better visibility and the light-weight body for my long-term wrist health.
